Sample Of The Week: Mobb Deep

Ask anyone what Mobb Deep song they know and their answer will almost always be Shook Ones Part II. The penultimate track on their magnum opus, The Infamous. The track follows on from their promotional song Shook Ones Pt. 1 which was sampled onBig Pun’s Beware. The song features similar themes on those who act hardcore until reality shows their true colours. Whilst the themes and chorus of the two songs may be similar, one main difference between the two songs is the beat

The song samples super producer Quincy Jones (check below), from his song Kitty With The Bent Frame and Herbie Hancock’s Jessica. It’s amazing when you hear how a 16 year old Havoc flipped the sample as it is nigh on impossible to detect where he found it in the full song as it essentially comprises of only 3 notes. Once the notes were made Havoc transformed it into this. Amazing how one of the most recognizable beats in hip hop was formed.
