Pete Rock And C.L Smooth – For Pete’s Sake

The Mount Vernon duo Pete Rock and C.L smooth released their critically acclaimed album album Mecca And The Soul Brother in 1992, whilst the albums most notable song is They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y) we’re going to pay tribute to the second track from the LP For Pete’s Sake. The song contains no less than 8 samples and could teach certain Hip Hop producers named after South East Asian countries how to flip a sample let alone the virtues of using a sample.

The song begins with C.L appearing in straight battle rap form armed with Morning Star and Shield before Pete Rock usurps him with lyrics that are tight, cohesive and will bludgeon any rapper attempting to battle the duo as they go back to back over an instrumental containing EPMD, Freddie McCoy and Kool & the Gang samples to name a few. This is hip hop at it’s finest ladies and gentlemen as Mecca and The Soul Brother is in it’s entirety. Listen and enjoy the gift of hip hop.
