Model Spotlight: Anja Konstantinova

Over the years, the fashion industry has seen several trends in terms of the model “types” to represent luxury brands. We’ve seen the bold, leggy models of the 80s and 90s (Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer), her highness, Kate Moss, the famous waif, and the lanky model types of the early 2000s. In our most recent decade, however, the industry has opened its doors to a variety of new model types who are getting actual WORK (i.e. Tara Lynn, Thylane Blondeau, Kristen McMenamy, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, Andrej Pejic, etc, etc, etc.). Anja Konstantinova is one of the more recent models who’s working her way up the fashion food chain, despite not fitting the conventional “mold.”

So what’s the big deal? Russian-born (Australian-bred) Anja Konstantinova has a babydoll face with icy white details (check her peroxide blonde hair and eyebrows), but what’s most fascinating about her is that she’s making ripples on and off the runway with a modest 5’4 stature. You may remember her from Wildfox Swim’s Spring 2012 lookbook, which came out last summer. Since then, the 21 year old has walked for Ellery and Friend of Mine in Australia’s Fashion Week, and has done countless editorials (Vogue, Oyster, Jalouse, Marie Claire, Madame, Fashion Gone Rogue, etc).

Konstantinova is currently with Priscilla Model Management (the same management that got Bambi Northwood-Blyth, 5’7 onto international runways). Though at her stature, she doesn’t do much runway (yet), she’s definitely become a favorite for lookbooks and editorials. She’s represented Stylestalker, The Kooples, Urban Outfitters, Rusty, French Connection, Kahlo and Mad Love in the past two years alone. Most recently, she’s been featured in Vogue Taiwan’s September issue, and Nasty Gal’s August Lookbook (which you can find here). With Fall Fashion Week almost upon us, I’m crossing my fingers that she works her way onto one of the runways this season, but whether she walks or not, Stylestalker called it right in 2011 — “Baby’s On Fire.”

Anja is a cat enthusiast (her nickname is “Gattina,” Italian for kitten), and an all around sweetheart, according to industry insiders, so if you don’t keep up with editorials, you can find her (and contact her) at
