Sample of the Week takes a refreshing turn into Brit Pop this week, focusing on probably one of the best British songs to come out of the 90s, which samples a song written by one of the best songwriters to come out of Britain.
‘Don’t Look Back In Anger‘ was written by Noel Gallagher (and performed by him too). Noel has openly commented that the chords have been lifted from the opening of John Lennon‘s classic ‘Imagine‘.
A few more interesting facts about the song include the origin of some of the lyrics. The ‘so Sally can wait…’ line came about when Noel was rehearsing a draft/demo of the song backstage, prompting Liam Gallagher to ask “Are you singing ‘so Sally can wait’ ?”. The reply to which was ‘No’ but the lyrics were used anyway.
As previously mentioned, the song is one of the few early Oasis tracks actually sang by Noel. Liam practically begged Noel to sing the hit ‘Wonderwall‘, of which Noel agreed to, on the basis that he would sing ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger‘.
